Through introduction to multimedia, students will explore three distinct approaches to advocacy—podcasting, videography, and creating fliers or delivering vocal presentations—during the program. These methods are designed to equip students with diverse tools to address community needs and amplify their voices.
Students will learn the basics of storytelling and audio production to create engaging podcasts that highlight environmental or social justice issues. This medium fosters skills in research, scripting, and broadcasting while encouraging thoughtful dialogue.
Students will develop visual storytelling techniques, including filming, editing, and crafting compelling narratives to convey advocacy messages. This hands-on experience teaches how to create impactful videos that resonate with their audience.
Combining creativity with clear communication, students will design visually appealing fliers or deliver powerful spoken presentations. This approach emphasizes persuasive communication and public speaking, essential tools for mobilizing their communities.

At YAYA, students have the opportunity to prepare fresh meals from scratch for everyone to enjoy. Our program takes into serious consideration any food allergies and dietary restrictions.
Students will need to provide one lunch for the first day of the trip. Please try to pack re-usable items instead of single use packaging. Thank you!
Our program prioritizes student safety above all else. Students are continuously supervised through a buddy system, staff, or chaperones. All staff are CPR and First Aid certified, and our Director holds a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification. We have strict safety policies in place, including risk assessments and emergency protocols. Additionally, students will be required to sign a contract agreeing to stay with the group at all times to ensure safety and accountability during activities.
YAYA has contingency plans to accommodate inclement weather. While we strive to stay outdoors whenever possible, student and staff safety is our top priority. In poor weather, we’ll shift to sheltered locations for activities such as indoor workshops or nature-based learning sessions. We will provide students with a packing list to help them prepare for various weather conditions, and there will be some donated gear available for students to borrow if needed.
One aspect that sets YAYA apart is our flexible curriculum, tailored to support both academic learning and outdoor experiences. We offer opportunities for teachers to extend classroom learning into nature, whether through focused lessons, integrating academic concepts into hands-on activities or providing time for teachers to lead their own curriculum. This holistic approach allows students to deepen their academic understanding while engaging with the environment, creating meaningful connections between education and the outdoors.
While we value the role of family, YAYA does not allow visits during the week to ensure that students fully engage with the program without distractions. We believe that students benefit most when immersed in the experience. In case of an emergency, you will be provided with direct contact information for our Director and the attending chaperones, so that you can coordinate as needed. Rest assured, we prioritize open communication and the safety of all participants.
Yes! Students are welcome to return to YAYA throughout their high school years. We encourage them, along with schools, to rejoin us for regular programming and events like family picnic days or our annual fundraiser at the end of the school year.
Additionally, there are separate opportunities for teens outside of YAYA, such as summer activities. For more information on these, visit our 'Friends of YAYA' page
